Bedmaking on an occupied bed is a common task for certified nursing assistants (CNAs) in healthcare settings. Proper bedmaking ensures the comfort, hygiene, and well-being of residents or patients. Here are the steps to make an occupied bed while ensuring the resident's safety and comfort:
-
Gather Supplies:
- Clean linens (bedsheets, pillowcases, blankets)
- Waterproof mattress pad (if needed)
- Bedspread or additional blankets
- Pillow(s)
- Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves
-
Explain the Process:
- Communicate with the resident to explain what you'll be doing and assure their comfort and privacy.
-
Adjust Bed Height:
- Set the bed to a comfortable working height and lock the wheels for safety.
-
Loosen Linens:
- Gently loosen and roll up the top linens (blanket and bedspread) toward the resident's feet, taking care not to disturb them.
-
Remove Soiled Linens:
- If the linens are soiled, gently remove them from under the resident's body while maintaining their dignity and privacy.
- Roll up the soiled linens away from the resident.
-
Prepare Clean Linens:
- Lay out the fresh bottom sheet and tuck it securely under the mattress on the side where the resident isn't lying.
- Position the clean linens within easy reach.
-
Position Resident:
- Communicate with the resident to ensure their cooperation.
- Gently assist the resident to turn onto their side, facing away from you.
- Roll up and remove the soiled bottom sheet from under the resident.
-
Apply Clean Bottom Sheet:
- Smooth the clean bottom sheet over the mattress, tucking it securely on the side where the resident was previously lying.
-
Reposition Resident:
- Gently assist the resident to turn onto their back or as per their preference.
- Ensure the resident is comfortable and well-supported.
-
Replace Top Linens:
- Unroll the clean top linens (blanket and bedspread) over the resident.
- Tuck the linens in neatly at the foot of the bed and along the sides.
- Adjust Pillows:
- Adjust or replace pillows as needed to support the resident's comfort.
- Final Adjustments:
- Smooth out wrinkles and ensure the bedspread is evenly distributed.
- Ensure the resident's call button, personal items, and any essentials are within their reach.
- Dispose of Soiled Linens:
- Dispose of soiled linens in designated receptacles following infection control protocols.
- Document:
- Document the bed change and any observations in the resident's chart as per facility protocols.
Making an occupied bed requires sensitivity, effective communication, and the ability to prioritize the resident's comfort and dignity throughout the process.
