Bed making is an essential skill for certified nursing assistants (CNAs) in healthcare settings. Properly making a bed ensures the comfort, safety, and hygiene of the resident or patient. Here are the steps to follow when making a bed for a resident:
- Gather Supplies:
- Clean linens (bedsheets, pillowcases, blankets)
- Waterproof mattress pad (if needed)
- Bedspread or additional blankets
- Pillow(s)
- Clean linens (bedsheets, pillowcases, blankets)
- Wash Hands and Wear PPE: Before handling linens, wash your hands thoroughly and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves.
- Prepare the Bed:
- Lower the side rails if the bed has them, ensuring safety.
- Adjust the bed to a comfortable working height.
- Remove Old Linens:
- Loosen and remove the soiled linens (bedsheets, pillowcases, and any protective pads).
- Roll them up, keeping any soil contained.
- Clean the Mattress:
- Check the mattress for any spills or moisture; clean and disinfect as needed.
- Place a fresh waterproof mattress pad if required.
- Apply Bottom Sheet:
- Spread the fitted sheet over the mattress, ensuring a snug fit and smooth surface.
- Tuck the sheet securely under the corners of the mattress.
- Add Flat Sheet:
- Place the flat sheet over the fitted sheet, aligning the top edge with the mattress top.
- Tuck the sheet at the foot of the bed and along the sides, leaving enough sheet to fold over the blanket.
- Place Blanket and Bedspread:
- Fold the blanket lengthwise and place it over the foot of the bed, aligning it with the top edge of the mattress.
- If using a bedspread, place it over the blanket.
- Arrange Pillows:
- Place pillows inside clean pillowcases and arrange them at the head of the bed.
- Some residents may use additional pillows for comfort or positioning.
- Tidy the Bed:
- Smooth out wrinkles and ensure the bedspread is evenly distributed.
- Tuck in the sides of the flat sheet and blanket for a neat appearance.
- Adjust the Bed Height and Rails:
- Raise the bed to a safe height for the resident's comfort.
- Ensure side rails are raised if necessary and properly secured.
- Dispose of Soiled Linens:
- Dispose of soiled linens in designated receptacles and follow infection control protocols.
- Wash Hands and Document:
- Wash your hands after completing the task.
- Document the bed change and any observations in the resident's chart as per facility protocols.
Remember that the specific steps may vary based on the facility's policies, the resident's needs, and any infection control measures in place. Always prioritize the comfort and safety of the resident during the bed-making process.
